Bible Verse:
“Ye turn to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven” – 1Thessalonnians 1:9-10.
A missionary once bought a bronze figure of a dog and took it to the mission field where he worked in a Burma. He placed it in a conspicuous position in front of his house. The passersby asked him, “Why have you put that dog outside your house?”
The missionary replied “because I am often lonely and needed a dog to protect me”.
The passers asked “but your dog cannot see, hear, bark and bite. How can it protect you?” The missionary replied “What are your Gods made of? They are made of wood, stone and metal.
They can’t see any better than my dog. Yet you bowed down before that idols and pray to them to protect you. I often told you that God in heaven is the only true God, and He gave His Son so that everyone who believes in Him has eternal life. So, you forget your worthless Gods and turn to the true Gods.
The crowd disbursed in silence.
Perhaps this incidence does not affect you.”You think, as I am not an idolater”. In this context, idol means not only physical idols but also mental idols like
1. Money
2. Success
3. Ambition
4. Power
These 4 idols capture us and prevent us from serving living God and True God. The Thessalonians were converted when they acknowledged the one true God. He has revealed himself in His Son, Jesus Christ, who has freed believers of their sins. He will return soon to take them along with Him to heaven.
