The Ten Commandments

Only the other day we talked about how God chose Moses, the hero of the Old Testament to give His commandments for His people. Even though these commandments were given to the people in the Old Testament, they still apply in essence to God’s people even today. Many so called devout Christians do not even know all of them. God wrote these specific commandments on a stone tablet! It only goes to show how serious He was. There is a power and authority on these commandments. All of us have heard so much about the Ten Commandments that we do not consider them important now. I am attempting to recap all that we learnt when we were young.  The Ten Commandments were from Exodus 20: 1-17. Take a look again...  And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  1. You shall have no other gods before me.  2. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.  5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God … [Read more...]

Are you hearing the truth?

Day in and day out we are being bombarded by dangerous information, ideas, opinions and diverse points of view from everyone everywhere. We just have to switch on our television sets, open the morning newspapers and we can see them all – from health disasters to terrorist attacks, from Wall Street collapse to increased gas prices, from rape and murder in our neighbourhoods to the impending disaster of global warming. Even the man who knows he is in a safest position is bound to get rattled and concerned. But we who are born again need not have to worry one bit, for even though we live in this world, in reality we do not belong to this world. We became God’s people when we chose to believe in the power of the blood of Jesus that set us free.  Still, it is worthwhile reminding ourselves that it is most important that we recognize the truth of God’s Word in all its total power and that we allow it only to be the final deciding authority in our lives. It is no use being frightened about the swine flu epidemic when we know for sure that “by His stripes we were healed.” We were healed even before we fell sick only by those stripes that Jesus took for us. This only emphasises the need for us to remind ourselves of the Word of the Living God when we are being bombarded by all the negativity around us in our neighbourhoods, in the print and electronic media. We can do this by spending more time in God’s Word and ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten us the Scriptures about every situation.  It is also important that we make sure that we are receiving teaching that is purely from the Bible in our Bible study class rooms and churches. These are last days before the second coming of Jesus. Satan is doing everything to deceive God’s people by distorting even about God’s Word. Only the other day we saw Brother Kenneth Copeland warning his convention about people even in the ministry giving teaching that did not line up with God’s Word. When we look closely, even the Bible warns us about deceptive teaching. See Colossians 2:8, “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit...”  We are … [Read more...]
